Disabled Placards/Permits

Disabled parking placards are available to anyone who is temporarily or permanently disabled. Only one disabled parking placard is allowed per individual. Individuals can move the placard to any vehicle in which they are travelling. There is no charge for a disabled placard/permit.

To receive a disabled parking placard you may apply either in person or via mail:

  • Your doctor must complete and notarize form MV-9D or doctor prescription and then this must be submitted to our office along with a copy of your Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address.
  • If the placard recipient is unable to be present, then a representative can provide an original notarized Power-of-Attorney along with a copy of the applicants Georgia driver's license or ID card with current DeKalb County address.
  • If the applicant is a minor without an ID card, then a copy of the birth certificate or acceptable documentation is required listing the parent or guardian.

Temporary Placards are red in color and are issued for 6 months. A new MV-9D or doctor prescription is required for a renewal.

Permanent placards are blue in color and are issued for 4 years. A new MV-9D or doctor prescription is not required for renewal. To renew, the individual must present the expiring placard, and their Georgia driver’s license or ID card with their current DeKalb County address to any of our three offices.

Disabled Person's License Plate

Only individuals with permanent disabilities are eligible for a disabled person's license plate, which must be applied for in person. You must meet the same requirements as above:

  • Your doctor must complete and notarize form MV-9D or doctor prescription and then this must be submitted to our office along with a copy of your Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address.

A disabled person’s license plate costs $20 plus any other fees and penalties which may apply, including ad valorem tax and TAVT if applicable.

If the vehicle currently has a valid Georgia license plate and a disabled person’s license plate is being requested for that same vehicle, the Georgia license plate must be returned to the tag office. If it is not returned, a disabled person’s license plate cannot be issued.

NOTE: To update your address on your Georgia driver's license in person or online, visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) website https://dds.georgia.gov. A temporary license or online confirmation displaying the DeKalb County address will be accepted.
