Trailer Requirements

Trailer registration and title requirements depend on the trailer’s type, weight, and model year. Review the lists below to determine what documentation is required and what fees may apply.

Titled Trailers

(Original title required for registration)

  • 1986 & newer travel trailer
  • 1986 & newer car/tow dollies shipping weight 2,001 lbs. or more
  • 1986 & newer trailers shipping weight of 2,001 lbs. or more
  • 1986 & newer campers

Non-Titled Trailers will receive registration only.

(MSO, Title, and/or Bill of Sale required for registration) 

  • Boat trailers
  • Trailers weighing 2,000 lbs. or less
  • Homemade trailer
  • Car/Tow dollies weighing 2,000 lbs. or less

Fees

  • $12.00 license plate fee
  • Sales Tax, if applicable
  • Annual Ad Valorem Taxes
  • $18.00 Title transfer fee if applicable

Purchase from a dealer/business

Requirements:

  • Manufactured statement of origin (MSO)
  • Bill of sale  
  • GA Driver’s License or GA Identification card with current DeKalb County address

Homemade trailers

A homemade trailer is a trailer that has been fabricated and/or individually assembled by an individual (not mass produced). Modifying or adding to a manufactured trailer is not considered a homemade trailer.  

Homemade trailers are required to have a serial plate affixed before the trailer can be registered and a license plate issued.

  • T-22B form completed by Georgia Law Enforcement Officer
  • Trailer must be inspected by a representative at our Memorial or South DeKalb locations

Additional instructions will be provided by the representative if trailer is deemed an actual homemade trailer. Manufactured trailer without a serial number affixed to the trailer cannot be register in DeKalb County. 

Purchase from an individual (casual sale)

Requirements:

If previous GA owner registered trailer

  • Bill of sale or Title if shipping weight is 2,001 lbs. or more
  • GA Driver’s License or GA Identification card with current DeKalb County address

If not previously registered in GA

  • Bill of sale or title if shipping weight is 2,001 lbs. or more
  • GA Driver’s License or GA Identification Card with current DeKalb County address
  • T-22B (serial number verification by law enforcement officer)

Note: Bill of sale should include seller, buyer, year of trailer, serial number, make, model, and purchase price.
