Understanding Your Property Appraisal

Property values in DeKalb County are determined by the Property Appraisal Department, which is responsible for assessing and maintaining fair market values for all properties. The Tax Commissioner’s Office uses those values to calculate and collect property taxes but does not determine or influence the assessed value.

Each year, the Property Appraisal Department mails an Annual Assessment Notice to property owners in May. If you disagree with the assessed value, you have 45 days from the date on the notice to file an appeal. Complete instructions for the appeal process are included in your notice.
