Irvin J. Johnson is a two-term Tax Commissioner of Dekalb County. Mr. Johnson began his career with the tax office in July 2000 as a Network Coordinator. Under the leadership of Tom Scott (deceased) and his successor, Claudia Lawson (retired), Mr. Johnson held several positions within the tax office including supervisor and manager level positions. He was appointed Chief Deputy Tax Commissioner in 2007, succeeded Claudia Lawson as tax commissioner in 2016, and was elected later that year to his first four-year term as the current tax commissioner.
Mr. Johnson is a proud graduate of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, a small college located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he earned his B.A. degree in Liberal Arts and a M. Ed degree in Education. Mr. Johnson’s professional experience and background was acquired as a Quality Systems\ISO 9000 Manager at Square D Company, with Michelin Tire Corporation as a Training Supervisor, with Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a Manufacturing Supervisor, and during his tenure with the Shenango Valley Urban League where he served as Job Development Coordinator.
Mr. Johnson is past President of the South DeKalb Rotary Club and a former member of the Board of Director’s at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Tucker, Georgia. Irvin was born in Augusta Georgia and lived there until his parents migrated to New York. Irvin is a 38-year member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, Kappa Alpha Alpha Chapter, Decatur, Georgia. Irvin has two adult children, Jeremy and Tia, and 2 grandsons, Cullen and Huey.
