DeKalb County offers several senior exemptions to citizens ages 62 and older based on age and income. This year, Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson proposed three legislative items to the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, expanding homestead exemptions. All were approved by the Board and passed by the Georgia General Assembly in March 2023. House Bill 591, 593 and 594 increases income limits for three exemptions by 150%. If approved by voters during the Nov. 7 election, these changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024 and seniors will have the opportunity to apply for these exemptions before the April 1st deadline.
