The following vehicles require a title:
- 1986 and newer model year vehicles and motorcycles
- Buses
- Motorhomes
- Mobile homes
- Travel trailers, campers, and horse trailers
- Utility trailers with an empty shipping weight of more than 2,000 pounds
The following vehicles are not required to be titled:
- 1985-1963 model year vehicles (optional to title)
- 1962 and older model year vehicles
- Boats and boat trailers
- Homemade trailers
- Utility trailers with an empty shipping weight of 2,000 pounds or less
Title application requirements
The following information is required to apply for a Georgia title:
- GA or out of state title ($18.00 fee)
- Payment of Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT)
- Valid Georgia Driver's License or ID card with your current DeKalb County address
Lost/Replacement Georgia Titles
You can apply for a replacement title, which cost $8.00 at any of our three locations. Titles will be mailed from the Georgia Department of Revenue and are usually received within 7 to 10 business days.
You also have the option of applying for an expedited title at the Georgia Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division, located at 4125 Welcome All Road, Atlanta, GA 30349. There is a $10 expedited charge in addition to the $8.00 replacement fee.
If any owner is unable to appear in person, an original notarized Power-of-Attorney and a copy of the driver's license or ID card for the absent person must be presented. The Power-of-Attorney must include the year, make, model, and vehicle identification number of the vehicle.
Removing a Lien
Removing a lien costs - $18.00 . Owner must have original lien release from lienholder (bank, credit union, etc) or title with lien original authorization signature.
If any owner is unable to appear in person, an original notarized Power-of-Attorney and a copy of the driver's license or ID card for the absent person must be presented. The Power-of-Attorney must include the year, make, model, and vehicle identification number of the vehicle.
Electronic Liens
All electronic liens (ELT) must be removed electronically by the lender through the Department of Revenue. Electronic liens cannot be removed in office with the T-4 or lien release document.
Name Change
In order to change the name on your registration, you must first change the title of the vehicle (1986 and newer). This can be done in person at any our three locations by providing the following:
- Updated Georgia driver's license or ID card with current DeKalb County address and with name change
- A certified copy of a court document authorizing the name change:
- Divorce decree
- Marriage certificate
- Court order
- $18.00 title fee
If the vehicle is financed, only the security lien holder (bank, credit union, etc) can request the name change by providing the original title and supporting documents.
Probated Will
The inheritor can sell the vehicle directly to a buyer. The inheritor will simply sign the title as seller on the back of the title and provide the buyer with the title and a certified copy of one of the following:
- Notarized Letter of Testamentary
- Notarized permanent letters of administration
- Approved Year’s Support application, which gives complete description of the vehicle including year, make, model, and vehicle identification number
If the inheritor would like to title the vehicle in their name, they would need the following:
- Georgia title
- Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address
- One of the following documents:
- Notarized Letter of Testamentary
- Approved Year’s Support application, which gives complete description of the vehicle including: year, make, model, and vehicle identification number
To register or “tag” the vehicle, additional requirements are as follows:
- Valid Georgia insurance electronically submitted into the Georgia Insurance Database or an insurance binder or declarations page less than 30 days old.
- Passing Georgia emissions test
Vehicle Inheritance
The information below is required when transferring ownership of a vehicle due to inheritance. In most cases, there are three scenarios in which a vehicle can be inherited through the following:
- Probated Will
- Non-Probated Will
- No Will
Vehicle Inheritance - Out of State
The inheritance process must be completed in said state when inheriting a vehicle from out of state. The following documents are required to register in Georgia:
- Original out of state title in the inheritor’s name
OR
- Original out of state title assigned over to the inheritor by a court appointed executor/administrator and the original court certified documents ( ex. Letters of Testamentary, Letters of Administration, etc.)
OR
- Original court certified documents of inheritance naming the inheritor as executor/administrator ( ex. Letters of Testamentary, Letters of Administration, etc.)
- Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address
- Valid Georgia insurance electronically submitted into the Georgia Insurance Database or an insurance binder or declarations page less than 30 days old.
- Passing Georgia emissions test
Non-Probated Will
An inheritor cannot sell an inherited vehicle with a non-probated will without first putting the title into their name. To get the title in the inheritor’s name, the following documents are required:
- Georgia title
- Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address
- Copy of non-probated will
- T-20 affidavit of inheritance
- Certified copy of death certificate
To register or “tag” the vehicle, additional requirements are as follows:
- Valid Georgia insurance electronically submitted into the Georgia Insurance Database or an insurance binder or declarations page less than 30 days old.
- Passing Georgia emissions test
No Will
To title a vehicle whereby the deceased left no will, the inheritor must first title the inherited vehicle into their name. To do so, the following documents are required:
- Georgia or out of state title
- Georgia driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address
- T-20 affidavit of inheritance
- Certified copy of death certificate
To register or “tag” the vehicle, additional requirements are as follows:
- Valid Georgia insurance electronically submitted into the Georgia Insurance Database or an insurance binder or declarations page less than 30 days old.
