We cannot thank you enough for serving our country!

Below we have provided information pertaining to important property tax and motor vehicle exemptions for our Veterans.

Property Tax Exemptions

If you are a homeowner and lived in your house on January 1st, you are eligible for a basic homestead exemption. You may be eligible for additional savings if the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) considers you to be a permanently and totally, service-connected disabled veteran receiving 100 percent benefits, or compensated as such. If you are the un-remarried, surviving spouse of a disabled veteran, you may also be eligible.

Veteran exemption applications may be processed by mail, in person, drop box, or online at https://dekalbtax.org/file-homestead-exemption. In order to qualify for these exemptions, you will need to provide the following:

  • Letter of adjudication from the VA or VA award letter
  • Copy of your driver’s license or ID card with current DeKalb County address.
  • Federal and state income tax forms (if over 65)

If you are not currently at considered 100% disabled by the VA, you may still be eligible for these special exemptions. You will need to present the following at our office:

Presentation of the veteran’s Honorable Discharge (DD214) and is entitled to receive a statutory award from the U.S department of Veterans Affairs for one of the following conditions:

  • A – Complete or permanent loss of use of one or both feet
  • B - Complete or permanent loss of use of one or both hands
  • C – Loss of sight in one or both eyes or
  • D – Permanent impairment of vision of both eyes of the following status: central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, with corrective glasses, or central visual acuity of more than 20/200 if there is a field defect in which peripheral field has contract to such an extent that the widest diameter of visual field subtends on angular distance no greater than 20 degrees in the better eye.

NOTE: This exemption may be transferred to, or applied for by, the un-remarried widow(er) of a disabled veteran or the un-remarried spouse of a US service member killed in action.

The Georgia Department of Revenue is proud to be able to offer current and retired military members specialty license plates to honor your service.

Disabled Veterans Plates

Honorably discharged Georgia veterans considered disabled by any of these criteria:

  • VA-rated 100 percent totally disabled

  • VA-rated less than 100 percent disabled but paid at the 100 percent rate due to unemployability.

Veteran must provide our office with a VA entitlement letter specifying the total percentage of disability.  This letter is required each time a veteran plate is requested.   Veterans are only allowed a maximum of 2 Disabled Veterans plates.  The first plate is free and the additional plate is $45.00.  (Vehicle may be subject to taxation)

Fees:

  • There is no registration fee, manufacturing fee, or annual fee for this plate.

  • Veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability rating are exempt from ad valorem taxes on one vehicle. (See the Tax Exemptions section.)
