DECATUR, Ga. – Representatives from the DeKalb County tax commissioner's office are available year-round to speak to community groups about property taxes, and help homeowners understand homestead exemptions and their tax bills.

“Since 2016, this office has conducted in-person and online community presentations to help taxpayers understand homestead exemptions and their property tax bills. We will continue to offer presentations to groups such as real estate professionals, homeowner associations and senior centers that are interested in learning more about services at the tax office,” said Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson.

The office conducts in-person and online seminars annually with community organizations, which have included the Lou Walker Senior Center, Central DeKalb Senior Center, East DeKalb Senior Center, Belvedere Civic Club, Toney Valley Civic Association, Wounded Warrior Project, and more. Organizations may contact the tax commissioner’s office by completing an online request form at https://dekalbtax.org/invite_us.

Homestead exemption applications can be filed online from January until the April 1 deadline. Applications are also accepted in person year-round at all office locations during business hours. Special exemptions are available for eligible seniors, disabled residents, disabled veterans or surviving spouse, surviving spouse of a U.S. service member, and surviving spouse of a peace officer or firefighter. Age and income requirements must be met to qualify for senior exemptions.

Applications received after the April 1 deadline will be processed for the following year.

Homeowners applying for a homestead exemption must own and occupy the home as their primary residence as of Jan. 1, have all vehicles registered in DeKalb County at the primary residence, have a Georgia ID or Georgia driver’s license showing residency at the property, file income taxes from the property, and not have a homestead exemption anywhere else.

Once an exemption is granted, it automatically renews as long as the owner resides at the property, or until a different exemption is filed and granted.

For more information on how to check your homestead exemption status online or to apply, visit DeKalbTax.org or call 404-298-4000 for assistance. Follow @dekalbtaxga on Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn and Bluesky for updates from the DeKalb County tax commissioner’s office.
